A new children's library in Kenya to help those living with and at risk of NCDs!

Dr Laura Musambayi

CLAN is proud to support the inspirational Dr Laura Musambayi in her efforts to establish a not-for-profit, community-based, disability-friendly children’s library in Kakamega County, Western Kenya. This library will be unique, in that it will also act as a source of information for children’s health. The facility will organise activities that educate children and adolescents about health promoting behaviour.

The library will be not-for-profit and will owe its success to heavy community-engagement and multi-sectoral collaboration. Dr Musambayi plans to dedicate one room to function as an NCD room where members of the community will have access on information on various NCDs especially those affecting them. In particular, the library will seek to support ongoing activities for the community of children living with Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) in Kenya.

Through mind-stimulating indoor and outdoor activities, the library will teach children values and practices that will improve their health, learning, growth and development. These children in turn will be encouraged to share their newfound knowledge with their friends and families. Through tree-planting and community clean up days, the members will get a chance to participate in caring for their environment as well.

This project will directly and indirectly contribute to the achievement of several of the Sustainable Development Goals such as promoting health and well-being of children ages 6-17, promoting gender equality and empowerment of the girl-child as well as inclusion of children living with disabilities, and environmental conservation.
