Important reading - UNICEF's #AChildIsAChild Report

World leaders are meeting in Sicily for the G7 on 26-27 May 2017 to discuss the state of the world. Only a few miles away, almost every day children are arriving on those same shores, escaping their homes in the hope of building a better life in a safer country.

As UNICEF's new report,  A Child is a Child points out, the world has seen almost a five-fold increase in the number of refugee and migrant children traveling alone since 2010. And even when they travel with their families, they face several terrible risks and often fall through the cracks.

UNICEF is calling on G7 leaders to acknowledge that children on the move are first and foremost children and to come up with plans to protect them and ensure all their rights are protected every step of their way.

In particular, UNICEF is asking all governments to act on the following agenda for action:

  1. Protect child refugees and migrants, particularly unaccompanied children, from exploitation and violence.
  2. End the detention of children seeking refugee status or migrating by finding practical alternatives.
  3. Keep families together as the best way to protect children and give children legal status.
  4. Keep all refugee and migrant children learning and give them access to health and other quality services.
  5. Press for action on the underlying causes of large-scale movements of refugees and migrants.
  6. Promote measures to combat xenophobia, discrimination and marginalization in countries of transit and destination

When world leaders adopted the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants in September 2016, they acknowledged the urgent and unmet needs of vulnerable child migrants. It is time to act and deliver on this promise and CLAN is proud to support UNICEF's vital work and help raise awareness of tragedy experienced by so many children... Because #AChildIsAChild...
