Thanks to APPES & APEG!

CLAN was thrilled to receive an invitation from APPES (the Asia Pacific Paediatric Endocrine Society) and APEG (the Australasian Paediatric Endocrine Group) to host a complimentary stall at the first joint APPES/APEG Scientific meeting held in Darwin, Australia from the 29 - 31 October 2014.

Having hosted stalls at APPES Conferences over many years now, CLAN was keen to use this stall in 2014 in a new way. Rather than CLAN designing the stall ourselves, we invited local partners from across the region to submit proposals and outline their own vision for running the stall independently. CLAN's vision for the stall was that it might enable our partners to share their OWN stories with delegates and colleagues; celebrate their own achievements in supporting children and families living with chronic health conditions in low- and middle-income settings related to endocrinology; and inspire others that anything is possible when we all work together.

CLAN received an excellent proposal from Dr Tran Trieu Phuong Dong and Dr Nguyen Thi Minh Tan from Children's Hospital 2 (CH2) in Ho Chi Minh City. Sincere thanks must go to Dr Ha Manh Tuan, Director of CH2 for supporting his staff in this venture.

The stall was fabulous with full length posters expressing the work of CH2 in Vietnam and ways their team has integrated the five pillars of CLAN in all they do. Colourful posters told stories of patient and family empowerment and participation; the value of disseminating translated educational resources; a commitment to ongoing health professional development; and the importance of local community support and development as an underlying framework.

Networking opportunities were unparalleled, and Drs Dong and Tan reported in-depth discussions with colleagues from a broad range of countries across the region who expressed keen interest in the work and achievements of CH2. The stall was also a powerful reminder of the broad range of educational resources now widely available on the internet, and inspired many to speak with the staff from CH2 about ways they had worked to breach gaps in translated information available to families in their own language. To this point, sincerest thanks must also go to two other fantastic people: Ms Irene Mitchelhill for her invaluable support of CLAN and the team from CH2 in the planning of this stall, and for sharing her CAHPepTalk resources so generously with all; and Assoc Prof Maria Craig for her ongoing commitment to Paediatric Endocrinology in Vietnam over so many years, in particular helping CLAN and the team at CH2 make the most of training and development opportunities at the APPES/APEG Conference in 2014.

On reflection, the 2014 APPES/APEG/CH2/CLAN Stall was a tremendous success, and CLAN would like to sincerely thank all involved. CLAN continues to receive strong, positive and affirming feedback on the incredible success of the stall, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who made this possible. Great things happen when we all work together!!
