What is CAH?
Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) is the commonest adrenal condition of childhood. It is a genetic condition, and is more common in some countries than others as a result.
Treatment is lifelong and consists of taking tablet medication several times a day.
Treated appropriately, children with CAH should enjoy a fulfilling life, with a great quality of life. Without appropriate treatment however, CAH can have a serious adverse impact on children's health and well-being, and the sad reality is that children with CAH die with no treatment, and are seriously disabled with inadequate access to health care.
To illustrate the impact of global inequity on child health, by way of example there are currently no children known to be alive with CAH in Cambodia... In Vietnam (where the condition has been recognised since 1976 in Hanoi and 1999 in Ho Chi Minh City) there are about 700 children known to have CAH in 2010. In Australia the incidence of CAH is approximately 1:15,000 - in the Philippines it is around 1:6,000.
