A virtual discussion on ‘The Impact of COVID-19 on Obesity and Diabetes in the Asia-Pacific Region’ was hosted in October of 2021 by NCD Child, in partnership with CLAN and the Asia-Pacific Paediatric Association (APPA). The two-day workshop provided an opportunity for individuals in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their advocacy and leadership skills, and collaborate on strategies to keep young people living with obesity and/or diabetes safe during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
CLAN’s United Nations Youth Representative Annie Sanchez introduced keynote speaker Mr. Bundi Gunadi Sadikin (Health Minister of Indonesia) and moderated a panel discussion with Prof Louise Bauer (a childhood obesity expert), Dr. Jamal Raza (a pediatrician and former director at the National Institute of Child Health in Pakistan), Pat Spellman (a Māori Board member for Diabetes Foundation Aotearoa), and Prof Rekha Harish (Professor, MD and Head Department of Pediatrics GMC Jammu with expertise in childhood obesity, NCDs, food and nutrition and school canteen guidelines). There were also opportunities to attend breakout sessions that focused on networking, NCD Champions, outcomes of the inaugural WHO NCD Lab cycle, tips on running a successful social media campaign, and opportunities to voice ideas on obesity and diabetes. Within these breakout sessions, participants heard from various professionals that shared valuable insight on each topic.
