What is Osteogenesis Imperfect (OI)?

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a group of genetic conditions associated with changes to collagen that can make bones more vulnerable to fractures – which is why OI is sometimes referred to as “brittle bones”.

There are different types of OI, with symptoms that range from mild to severe. Children living with OI require different medical management that is tailored to their individual needs. Most children need access to assistive devices, allied health services, medication (such as bisphosphonate injections) and regular medical care. All children and families living with OI need the opportunity to connect with strong support groups.

Unfortunately, many children and families living with OI in low- and middle-income countries are not able to affordably access the quality health care, education and support needed to ensure their children survive and thrive. CLAN is committed to working with OI communities and other stakeholders internationally to drive sustainable solutions and long-term change.

“Why is Wishbone Day important? Because awareness makes a difference.”

Wishbone Day is an international OI awareness-raising day held on May 6th every year. Click on the tabs above to access and learn more about Wishbone Day, CLAN’s OI Child-Friendly Rights Flyer, additional resources, as well as OI across different countries.

Stay in touch with updates communities share from around the world as they celebrate Wishbone Day every year by following the hashtags #WishboneDay and #WBD!
