What was presented?
CLAN was approved to host a side event at CSocD62 and connected with members of the @MATES4Kids Network to focus on the important role Newborn Screening must play in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. CLAN notes that NBS is universally available in high-income countries (HICs), but not yet available at all in the majority of lower-income countries. Specific efforts are required to scale NBS internationally, and redress the preventable child mortality and morbidity that occurs as a result of this inequity.
This side event seeks to contribute to efforts to scale NBS internationally by:
- Raising awareness – the event showcased the successes of NBS champions in lower-income settings, and highlighted the urgent need for collective action to further scale NBS to protect and promote the rights of newborns with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) that can be diagnosed early, such that appropriate treatment can be initiated and the children ultimately supported to achieve their full potential in life.
- Promoting networking – NBS advocates and champions had the opportunity to connect and share their stories and insights.
- Sharing resources – presentations and shared resources will be made available for ongoing access on the WHO’s Knowledge Action Portal in the @MATES4Kids Community of Practice.

This report, submitted in December 2023, focuses on the current gaps in core social services that hamper social development and social justice, and particularly emphasises the importance of rights-based approaches, Universal Health Coverage and protection of families from out of pocket health expenditures that result in extreme poverty. CLAN’s submission highlights the import role Newborn Screening must play in achieving social development
and justice for all.
