Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition that affects thousands of children and adolescents around the world. T1 Diabetes occurs when a person’s immune system destroys insulin-producing cells in their pancreas (a large gland that sits behind the stomach).
Whilst the exact cause of T1 Diabetes is not yet known, the treatment needed to manage T1 Diabetes is well established.
Children and adolescents affected by T1 Diabetes need life-long insulin injections. They also need to check their blood glucose levels regularly. With the correct treatment and support of caring health professionals, people living with T1 Diabetes can expect to enjoy a long, healthy and happy life.
Unfortunately, children and families living with T1 Diabetes in many low- and middle-income countries are not able to affordably access insulin or the medical equipment and care they need to survive and thrive. CLAN is committed to working with Diabetes Communities internationally to drive sustainable solutions and long-term change.
